The Full Tummy Project: Fighting childhood hunger one Full Tummy at a time.
Since its approval by the Livingston Parish School Board in 2010, Mighty Moms has been grateful to have a project that has allowed us to spread the love of Jesus one Full Tummy at a time. Each week, bags of food are distributed before the weekend to those children whose only nourishing meals are the ones from the school cafeteria. This is accomplished through the generosity and love of many people. School guidance counselors notify Mighty Moms of the number of children in need of food for the weekend. Then volunteers fill food bags for each student. Those food bags are then delivered to the schools.
Mighty Moms distributed a total of 487 Full Tummy bags during the 2011/2012 school year. During the 2012/2013 school year, Mighty Moms distributed an average of 100 bags a week. During the 2014/2015 school year, many more students in need were identified and we delivered more than 500 Full Tummy Bags a week to 41 different Livingston Parish Schools! We finished the school year with an amazing total of 14,491 Full Tummy Bags delivered! The 2015/2016 school year proved to be our largest Full Tummy Project year so far. Delivering 18,380 full tummy bags to 630+ students every week. This little project has grown into something we never dreamed it would be. Full Tummy is now an important part in the lives of so many children. We now have 28 delivery moms, who faithfully (rain or shine) meet us on Wednesdays to pick up the children’s bags and deliver to their assigned school(s). Our bag packers, about 50 of them, rotate every week and get the 600+ weekly bags packed and ready to go. Our grocery bill can be up to $10,000 monthly. It continues to grow.
The good-willed, loving people of our community support Mighty Moms in an enormous way. Financially, yes! We could not feed so many children without their financial support. But our volunteers and supporters help in so many important ways. Mighty Moms has so many thoughtful, caring, precious people helping us keep the Full Tummy project going every week. Through their efforts and support, they help us with food drives, barrel deliveries, purchasing and unloading groceries, spreading the word of our mission and lifting our group in prayer. They send encouraging emails and handwritten notes that lift our spirits and energize us. We could not do this without the help of these supporters and volunteers, churches and the many blessings from our loving Heavenly Father.
We are so blessed to be a part of something that is a blessing to many. We are grateful and our hearts are full.
