For years, I have wanted to have a Childhood Hunger Awareness Day in our community. Parish President, Layton Ricks, and I talked about it several years ago and he told me, “just tell me when.” Several months ago with the help of our friend and board member, Jan Benton, it was approved for the 2018/2019 LPSB calendar. Once that was a done-deal, I called Layton and he once again said, “just tell me when.” I am happy to tell you that September 5 will be recognized in our parish as CHILDHOOD HUNGER AWARENESS DAY.
Layton Ricks will issue the proclamation at the Parish Council Meeting on August 23 at 6:00pm. Many of us Mighty Moms will attend that meeting in our new Childhood Hunger Awareness T-shirts and wearing our teal awareness ribbons. It’s going to be an special night for us and our cause.
Our hope is that in the days leading up to September 5, as well as September 5, that awareness for our cause and conversation about childhood hunger will begin to happen all over our parish.
1 in 5 children in Louisiana live in food insecure homes. The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. Children who live in food insecure homes sometimes run out of money to buy food or the food runs out before the family can get more money. Mighty Moms feeds hundreds of children every week through several different projects. The number of children continues to rise each school year. In order for us to continue feeding these precious children, we need YOUR help!
The LPSB schools will participate in raising money and awareness on September 5 in many ways. We hope individuals and businesses will do the same. We will sell CHA t-shirts and ribbons. We will be at Sams Club in Denham Springs on Saturday, August 25 from 10-12. We need volunteers to serve with us on August 25 at Sams. We need help making 20,000+ awareness ribbons before August 26. We need businesses and individuals to help us raise money to support Full Tummy Project, Feeding Young Minds, and our monthly Food Pantry.
