School Boards– An Integral Part of the School System

We hope you enjoy this blog post as much as we do.   Our Board Member, Jan Benton, is also one of our elected School Board members as well.  She took the time to explain what school boards do for their communities.  Enjoy!

What do school boards do?

A school board’s primary responsibilities are to:

  • Adopt policies that give the district direction to set priorities and achieve its goals
  • Adopt and oversee the annual budget
  • Hire and evaluate the superintendent
  • Commit to a vision of high expectations for student achievement and quality instruction and define clear goals toward that vision

Effective school boards lead as a united team with the superintendent, each from their respective roles, with strong collaboration and mutual trust.

A typical school board meeting includes many business items, such as approving the school calendar, adopting curriculum, overseeing construction, and approving contracts with outside vendors. A successful school board balances discussion of the seemingly tedious business of running the district while paying close attention to the district’s priorities for academic achievement.  It is always a pleasure to have students attend the meetings to share their academic and/or athletic achievements.

Nine members comprise the Livingston Parish Public School Board.  We each represent a particular district throughout Livingston Parish.  We support the schools in our district through a collaborative relationship with staff and community.  We take great pride in all of our schools.  It a pleasure for us to serve Livingston Parish Public Schools and to set policies that affect your child and your school.
